What We’re Reading
A few good articles the Collab team came across this week …
Usefulness
The best career advice you could give a young kid starting out is for them to identify a senior person’s pain point and offer to take that work away from them. Not only is it perhapsthesingle best pieceofcareer advice I’ve ever heard, but it’s applicable to everyone at pretty much every level, not just someone coming outofschool.
Productivity
A look at what more popular types of energy does to power plant jobs:
Running Exelon’s 2,300-megawatt [nuclear] Limerick Generating Station in Pottstown, Penn., requires 800 workers. A two-hour drive north, Invenergy LLC is building the Lackawanna Energy Center, a 1,480-megawatt natural-gas fired plant. Once running, it will employ 30 people. Both will compete to provide electricity to the same regional power grid.
From Brent Beshore’s dinner with Buffett:
Many of my questions centered on Berkshire’s due diligence process, which is notoriously simple. I questioned whether the public story matched private practice. After patiently answering a series of specific questions about his acquisitions through the years, he said, “Price is my due diligence.” It was a show stopper and a clear articulation of his philosophy. The lower the price, the less due diligence required. If you pay a good enough price, a lot can go wrong and still be right.
Succinct
When you understand that nobody wants to read your sh*t, your mind becomes powerfully concentrated. You begin to understand that writing/reading is, above all, a transaction. The reader donates his time and attention, which are supremely valuable commodities. In return, you the writer must give him something worthy of his gift to you.
Have a good weekend.
